OCTOBER 21, 2020

To All McLean Youth Basketball Participants -

You may have heard a variety of stories through friends or other basketball programs about what is happening with youth basketball programs this coming winter season.  The answer, we do not know.

We are waiting for Fairfax County to officially notify us whether or not they will make school gyms available for community use (McLean Youth Basketball is classified as community use).  Right now, no gyms will be made available at least until schools are conducting full in-person classes for all students.  Fairfax County has indicated that this will not take place until at least mid-December 2020 and likely not until sometime early in 2021.

Even if schools return to in-person classes for all students, it is not clear that Fairfax County will want to take the additional risk of opening up school buildings to after school community based programs.  So we have to wait and see.  You may have heard other basketball programs are already posting schedules and anticipating putting teams together and scheduling a regular season.  They are doing this in anticipation of schools opening up and without any clear indication this is going to happen.

While McLean Youth Basketball would love to be able to offer a basketball program this year, we do not yet have any gym space allocation from the county and it does not look likely that we will get gym space anytime in the near future.  As a result, we will not hold any registration, tyrouts or drafts for the 2020-21 season until we have confirmed gym space and a plan to utilize that gym space.

Our hope, at this point, is that if Fairfax County decides to provide gym space for community use at some future date then we will implement a variety of possible uses including skill clinics, open gym play, modified tournaments (1-2 weekends) for house league teams and/or a shortened season.  At this time we do not believe it is beneficial to post schedules or attempt to select teams in anticipation of a season that may not happen.

If we get any news from Fairfax County that changes this situation we will post it to the website and alert all participants.  I am sorry we do not better news at this time.

Chairman, McLean Youth Basketball
