* FCYBL rules and McLean Select policies allow players not yet in 5th grade to play on a 10-Under team.
** FCYBL rules allow 9th grade girls to play on 14-Under teams. However, as a practical matter, it is extremely rare for a 9th grader to play on a FCYBL team as most freshman playing basketball play on a freshman, JV or varsity high school team.
Grade Exemptions
General rule -- Limit of 2 grade exemptions per team. FCYBL Rules Section 5.1.4 provides that each team is permitted two age exceptions. This means that each team may have two older players as long as they are in the “correct” grade. The applicable grade is noted for each of the age groups listed above.
No restrictions on Boys' 13-Under grade exception. At the boys 13-Under level (8th grade), there are no restrictions on the number of age exceptions. FCYBL Rules Section 5.1.4.
Helpful Background Tip: Basketball Age Groups vs. Soccer Age Groups
Frequently, the applicaton of age group determines across different sports is a point of confusion for families.
Therefore, this section of the McLean Select Basketball website is to assist families understand the age rules and terms applicable for FCYBL teams as compared to youth soccer teams.
Basketball age groups. FCBYL basketball determines a players age group by dictating that a player must be a CERTAIN AGE or YOUNGER on September 30. This is subject to the "Grade Exceptions" explained above.
Soccer age groups. The soccer age group rules require that a player be YOUNGER that a required age on August 1. Soccer has a strict age cut-off and no grade exceptions.
No such thing as a U-Age (e.g., U-11) basketball player. A basketball player is NEVER referred to as a "U-whatever" (e.g., U-12 ) player, but s/he is referred to as a Age-U (e.g. 13-U) player.
Conversion Chart. Generally, the soccer age for a player is one year greater that his/her basketball age group. This is because a soccer player can't be older than an age on the cut-off date, but a basketball player can be the specified age or younger.
The conversion chart is as follows:
