McLean Select Basketball
Team Selection Guidelines*
McLean Select Basketball has the following guidelines for its coaches when they select their teams:*
Roster Size: 10 Players
The McLean Select program will limit the roster for each of its teams to 10 players per team.
While the Fairfax County Youth Basketball League (“FCYBL”) rules allow more players per team, our Select program believes that a 10 player roster strikes the right balance of playing time, practice efficiency and overall player experience. Unlike many other Select progams, McLean offers two teams per age group which provides more available spots than most other communities.
Division of Players between Teams in Each Age Group
The coaching staffs of the “A” and “B” teams work closely together to best evaluate the available players during the tryouts.
In general, if the “A” team is eligible to compete in Division 1 in the FCYBL, the coach of this team will select all of the players for his team first. After the “A” team coach has selected his players, the “B” coach then selects the players for his team.
If both teams in an age group will compete in Division 2, the “A” team coach selects the first 7 players and the “B” team coach selects the next 5 players before the “A” team completes its selections.
Coaches are NOT Required to Select the Top Individual Players
Individual ability is a factor but not the determining characteristic of a player’s selection.
McLean Select Basketball places considerable emphasis on effort, attitude, and team chemistry. Our coaches also have different ideas on how to best construct a team (speed vs. skills vs. height vs. athletic potential) and McLean Select Basketball supports individual coaches in how they apply the various components of constructing their team.
Coaches May “Cut” Players Before Tryouts are Completed
To make tryouts most efficient for the overall group, coaches may “cut” players after the 2nd tryout – regardless of player attendance. Parents will receive notification of any “cuts” before 9am on the day of the next tryout.
Tryout Attendance
The more tryouts a player makes, the better chance the coaches have to see your player in action and make informed decisions. If possible, players should attend all tryouts. We also recognize that our players play many fall sports, and coaches will try to balance these conflicts in their evaluations.
Contacting Players After Tryouts
After the completion of tryouts, the coaches will contact a parent of each player by email or phone. For those players invited to join a team, parents will have 1 day to sign a FCYBL required form [link coming soon] that stipulates that the player has accepted an offer from the McLean Select Basketball program.
